CHAPTER 26

ZAYN

“My pack is here,” I announced.

“Yeah, I kind of figured that,” Ainsley said, her voice dry.

“They should be here in about an hour.” I glanced down at the dried blood still coating my side—and probably my back, as well.

Gingerly, I reached back and patted the wounds. My shift had closed them enough that I wasn’t actively bleeding anymore. “Guess I’d better go take a shower.”

By the time I got out the shower, Ainsley had cooked beans and rice. Glancing into the trashcan, I saw the same can of beans I considered using as a doorstop earlier, now empty.

This was a much better use, I decided.

“I figured you could probably use protein. I don’t know if werewolves eat beans, but there’s enough there for the rest of your pack, too, I think. How many of them are there?”

“Beans are great. And it sounded like three or four.”

For some reason, right now I didn’t want her to know that I could have named each of my packmates simply from the sound of their song. Whatever was connecting us—the bond that we had created between the two of us—all but vibrated with Ainsley’s anxiety about meeting the rest of my back, an anxiety that had extended itself to me, too. Something about hearing me respond to my packmates had unnerved her.

Probably not surprising, given that we had known each other for only a short time.

Right now was not the time to tell her that my wolf had decided we were mates.

And wolves mate for life.

Repressing a sigh, I dug into the food.

I ate enough to take the edge of my hunger, and then I couldn’t sit still any longer. I paced back and forth in her small living room, feeling like a caged animal, even though I knew I could leave at any time.

No leaving, my inner wolf admonished me. We stay to protect our mate.

No leaving. Agreed. I tried to calm my wolf down, but he was even more anxious to see our packmates than my human side was, if that was even possible.

In the end, I moved out to the front porch to wait, alternating between sitting down and tapping my foot anxiously and jumping back up to pace some more.

As I saw the three of them come out of the woods, I jumped off the porch and ran to meet them. Lukas got to me first, flowing out of his wolf shape and into his human form in a matter of seconds, in time to meet me in the middle of the open area in front of Ainsley’s cabin. He threw his arms around me in a crushing bearhug.

“You have no idea how good it is to see you,” he said. “We thought you were dead, man.”

Within seconds, Charlie and Philip had joined him, fairly tackling us in their excitement. We went down in a heap, and I winced when I hit the ground.

Philip, always the most observant of the three, instantly stood up and held out his hand to pull me up, too.
